Income Tax Department Enables Online Filing of ITR-5 for AY 2026-27.

The Income Tax Department has introduced online filing for Income Tax Return (ITR)-5 on its e-Filing portal for the Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27 for eligible taxpayers to file returns digitally. The move will be expected to ease the filing process of firms, LLPs and other eligible entities before the filing date. ITR-5 is applicable to partnership firms, Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs), Association of Persons (AOPS), Body of Individuals (BOIs), business trusts, estate of dead persons, estate of insolvent persons, investment funds and cooperative societies.
The form, however, cannot be used by individual taxpayers, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), companies filing ITR-6 or charitable and religious trusts filling ITR-7. Taxpayers can now file ITR-5 online and offline utilities (available on the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal) in Excel format with the latest update. The department has been taking a gradual path in allowing for various forms of ITR for AY 2026-27 to ensure timely filing of the tax returns. The due date for filing of ITR-5 will be related to whether the taxpayer is required to get their accounts audited under the Income Tax Act.
Subjects are encouraged to check their eligibility, do their financial information correctly and file as early as possible to prevent penalties or problems in the last minute. The Income Tax Department has also asked taxpayers to check and cross verify the information in their Annual Information Statement (AIS)/ Tax Information Statement (TIS)/ Form 26AS before filing the returns to reduce the risk of error, delay in processing returns or issuance of notice. The filing of the ITR-5 online is the next step in a phase-wise rollout of return filing for the current financial year, coming after ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-3 and ITR-4 were introduced online.
